How to Dress So You Look Like a Star

Celebs on red carpets look stunning both during public or business events. Oftentimes, we end up admiring their images on the internet or on magazine covers, wishing we could be as dashing.

We at 5-Minute Crafts are sure that in order to look elegant and “star-like” you don’t need access to an endless budget. All you need is to know some tricks that we will gladly share with you. If you are aware of other tricks, please share them with us in the comments.

Wear a white shirt.

A white shirt is a wardrobe item that is timeless and always in fashion. In the ’50s of the past century, it was worn by Audrey Hepburn, in the ’60s by Marilyn Monroe, in the ’90s by Princess Diana, and Sharon Stone showed up wearing this item on the Oscars red carpet. Many modern celebs from Meghan Markle to Victoria Beckham like to don this garment too.

This shirt will look appropriate and elegant in any situation: for going out in the evening, at the office, or worn in a casual way (with jeans, for example).

Opt for bright classic shoes.

Even a modest look, with basics will look elegant if you add bright classic shoes to it — the way
Reese Witherspoon did. You can choose not only bright, but even neon, shoes for your overall look the way street style celebs do it.

Go for prints that are timeless.

Classic patterns and colors are not subject to momentary fashion trends. And clothes with these prints create the impression of being more chic and expensive, even if they were bought in mass-market stores. These prints include — florals, polka-dots, stripes, glen check, and “houndstooth.”

Get a white T-shirt.

"I’ve always thought of the T-shirt as the Alpha and Omega of the fashion alphabet, the Italian designer Giorgio Armani used to say.

A white T-shirt, in its turn, is a basic item in the wardrobe that goes well with almost anything — from jeans to skirts. It’s no surprise that this T-shirt can often be seen in the looks of Victoria Beckham — clothing designer and recognized style icon.

Make a turtleneck part of your look.

A turtleneck is a wardrobe item that never goes out of style. It can be called the winter version of a basic T-shirt and the base of the wardrobe. At the same time, it is elegant and functional because it keeps the neck and the chest warm, eliminating the need to wear a scarf.

A turtleneck can be combined with anything — skirts, shorts, jeans, blazers, or cardigans, don it with sleeveless dresses or with business suits the way Kate Middleton did.

Opt for classical items that never go out of style.

Invest in wardrobe items that will serve you for a long time — a little black dress, jeans, a trenchcoat, a Breton striped shirt, and a sand-colored coat. Having these basic items in your wardrobe doesn’t mean your wardrobe will be boring. On the contrary, it is a guarantee that all clothing items can be easily combined with each other, which means you won’t face the common female problem of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear at the same time.

Create monochrome looks.

Donning clothes in one color from head to heels is a way to look dashing without much effort. These looks can be created using any color — bright or even neon, the way Blake Lively did it, or neutral colors like black, gray, beige, or white.

Moreover, wearing a top and bottom in the same color will create a continuous vertical line that visually elongates the silhouette, making you look taller and slimmer.

Enhance your look with accessories.

Accessories are like spices in a dish — without them, the look will be insipid and boring. At the same time, correctly chosen sunglasses, hats, bags, belts, and bijou can add a stylish touch to your look.

Take care of your clothes.

No look will be elegant, chic, and “star-like” if your clothes look unkempt. That’s why you should:

  • wash items according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you neglect the symbols on the labels of clothing, then your items may shed, shrink, or become unusable
  • take your clothes to the dry cleaners when needed
  • remove pilling
  • steam or iron creased clothes
  • repair your clothes that require fixing
  • sew on torn buttons
  • if needed, adjust clothes to your body shape using a tailor
