10 Backyard Crafts to Make Your Own Outdoor Paradise at Home
When the weather starts to warm up, there’s nothing better than spending time outside. That’s why we have prepared these fresh crafts and hacks for your backyard. You’ll see how easy it is to transform it into an amazing garden! And the best part is that you won’t need a very large open space. Stay with us to discover these super ideas for creating a wonderfully cozy and relaxing outdoor corner.
1. Broom
The first thing we will need to keep our patio in good condition is a broom to sweep away dust and collect the dry leaves that fall from the trees. To create one, we will use PET plastic bottles:
- Cut the top part of the bottle.
- Make vertical strips from the mouth of the bottle to the base, but without reaching the end.
- Repeat the same process with another bottle.
- Insert one into the other, flatten them, and secure them with staples, strong adhesive tape, or string.
2. Mosquito net
Mosquitoes are unavoidable in outdoor spaces, and especially if we have children, we must protect them from their bites. With mesh fabric and a hula-hoop, we can create a safe and insect-free play or reading area:
- Lay the fabric flat on the ground and tie a knot in one of its corners, creating a tube.
- Insert the hula-hoop inside and secure it to the fabric using clips, safety pins, or needle and thread.
- Now simply find a branch to hang it from.
3. Tool cart
To keep our garden in good condition, we’ll need various tools such as rakes, shovels, and hoses. Using an old cabin carry-on luggage, you can create a cart to easily transport your tools around the yard:
- Cut the top part of the suitcase to create the transport box.
- Attach fabric pockets and ropes to the front and sides to store and secure your tools.
4. Fly catcher
Flies can also be a significant nuisance, especially when food is around. Prepare a fly trap using honey; it’s incredibly quick and simple:
- Cut strips of thick paper or thin cardboard.
- Coat each strip with honey on both sides.
- Hang them in the areas where flies are most commonly found.
5. Relaxation area
Having a comfortable resting area will be essential. We can simply lay out a blanket and place some cushions around to lie down, but that won’t protect us from insects, especially ants, that might be present in the grass:
- Inflate an inflatable pool.
- Place a blanket and cushions inside.
- Get in and relax, feeling secure and shielded from any potential ant bites.
6. Clothesline
In summer, clothes dry very quickly in the sun, and to set up an outdoor clothesline, you’ll only need a rope:
- Measure the length of rope you need and double that length.
- Fold the rope in half and braid the two resulting ends together.
- Tie both ends of the rope to a tree.
- Hang your clothes easily without the need for clothespins to secure them.
7. Beach lounger
Another essential for any respectable garden is a sun lounger for relaxing under the sun’s rays and getting that typical summer tan. We can create its structure with two wooden pallets and set it up as follows:
- Place an insulating mat, like the ones used under sleeping bags when camping, on top of a large towel.
- Use glue or needle and thread to secure the towel to the mat.
- Place it on your pallet lounger whenever you want to sunbathe, and roll it up and store it when you’re done to prevent damage.
8. Colorful paintings
There’s nothing more inspiring than being outdoors, so why not let our creativity run wild and experiment a bit with art? Kids will love this activity:
- Find some canvases to paint on. Load a water gun with paint.
- Start shooting at the canvases as if your life depended on it.
- Let them dry and decorate any corner of the house that needs a splash of color.
9. Kiddie pool
Having a swimming pool at home can be a luxury we might not afford, but we can use our creativity to grant that indulgence to the little ones in the house:
- In an area that is not a thoroughfare, dig a small pit. It doesn’t need to be very deep; a foot or two at most will suffice.
- Cover the pit with sturdy transparent plastic.
- Fill it with water and let the kids enjoy splashing around.
10. Outdoor power outlet
You might need to connect an electrical device at some point, even if it’s just a mobile charger. We need to do this safely, considering it will be placed outdoors:
- Find a plastic box with a lid that fits the size of your extension cord outlet.
- Make two holes for passing the cables.
- Place the outlet and plug inside and put on the lid.
- Rain or shine, your plug will be protected.
