How to Build a Vertical Garden at Home
If you like plants but don’t have much space at home, consider the option of a vertical garden. The green wall is ideal for both indoors or outdoors, so the location won’t be a problem. All you have to think about is where to place it and what species of plants to grow.

Method 1: plastic bottles
Materials:
- 9 1-liter plastic bottles
- A razor or scissors
- A roll of metallic cord
- Nails
- A hammer
- Soil
- Plants or seeds
- Gardening gloves
- A watering can
Procedure:
- Cut a 2 in x 3 in (5 cm x 7 cm) rectangle on the side of each plastic bottle. Make 2 small holes in the neck of the bottle and 2 small holes at the base.
- To join the bottles 3 by 3, cut the metal cord into 6 pieces of 6 feet and 7 inches (2 m) each. Take a piece of cord and tie a knot at the end, then thread the cord through the 2 holes in the neck of the bottle and tie a knot to secure it. Leave 12 in (30 cm) of cord and repeat the procedure to make a series of 3 bottles. At the ends, leave 12 in (30 cm) of cord to be able to hang the bottles.
- To join the bottles at the base, take another piece of cord and tie a knot at the end, pass the cord through the 2 holes at the base of the bottle, and tie a knot to secure it. Leave 12 in (30 cm) and repeat the procedure to make a series of 3 bottles. Leave 12 in (30 cm) of cord to be able to hang the bottles.
- Tie a knot to join the 2 ends of the cord that secured the bottles at the base and neck.
- Place the nails in the wall for the 3 series of bottles with an appropriate amount of space between each one.
- Using gardening gloves, take the plants or seeds and place them in the holes in the side of each bottle. Water them plentifully. This design can be used indoors or outdoors, depending on the space you have at home. And you can grow any type of plant you want.
Method 2: wooden frame
Materials:
- A wooden frame with depth
- A metal grid
- Scissors
- Glue
- A nail
- A hammer
- Soil
- Plants or seeds
- Gardening gloves
- A spray bottle with water
Procedure:

Cut the metal grid to the same size as the wooden frame and place it where the frame glass will be located. Fix the edges with glue.

Using gardening gloves, pour soil to cover the entire bottom of the wooden frame. Insert the plants through the grid.

Hang the frame on the wall of your choice. This model is perfect for decorating the interior walls of your home. The ideal type of plants for this model are succulents since they don’t require much watering.
Method 3: metal cans
Materials:
- Metal cans
- Nails
- A hammer
- Paint
- Brushes
- Soil
- Plants or seeds
- Gardening gloves
- A watering can
Procedure:

Paint the cans in the color of your choice.

Make 2 small holes in each can’s top and the bottom so you can place them on the wall.

Put 2 nails in the wall at the same distance the holes were drilled in the cans. Then hook the cans to the wall. Make sure there is adequate space between each can.

Using your gardening gloves, scoop the soil and the plant or seeds into the cans. Water them plentifully. This design is suitable for any type of plant and can be used on exterior or interior walls.
Method 4: hanging pots
Materials:
- A pot with the plant of your choice
- A roll of cord or rope
- Scissors
- A hook-shaped screw
- A screwdriver
Procedure:
- Cut the cord or rope into 8 pieces that measure at 3 feet and 3 inches (1 m) each, and tie a knot that connects them all.
- Separate the 8 strips and knot them 2 by 2. Then put them back together 2 by 2, but alternate the strips from right to left.
- Tie a knot to bind all the strips together.
- Hang your pot using a screwdriver and a hook-shaped screw. This design is ideal for decorating interiors. It can be used to grow any type of plant.
Method 5: ladder
Materials:
- A wooden ladder with 3 to 4 steps
- Pots of different sizes with the plants of your choice
- Paint or varnish
- A brush
Procedure:

Choose the paint color of your choice. Pastels are ideal for indoors, while a bold color can work for outdoor spaces. Using a paintbrush, paint the wooden staircase.

Let the paint dry for 30 minutes. If you’d like, give it a second coat of paint. If you prefer the natural look of wood, use varnish instead of paint.

Wait until the paint or varnish is completely dry. Place the pots on the steps. You can select pots of different sizes, styles, and colors to add life to your vertical garden.
