Materials needed
- Doll
- Yarn
- Punch or needle
- Acetone and cotton swabs
- Wire and Pliers
- Aluminum foil
- Polymer or air-dry clay
- Carpenter’s tape
- Spray paint
- Sequins
- Plastic wrap
- Makeup and false eyelashes (optional)
- Epoxy resin or clear nail polish
1. Remove all the original hair from the doll
2. Using a punch or needle, insert strips of yarn into the holes where the original hair was
3. Continue placing strips of yarn until you completely cover the doll’s head
4. Soak a cotton swab in acetone and remove the doll’s original makeup from its eyes, eyebrows, and lips
5. Remove the doll’s legs and insert two pieces of wire through the leg holes, bending them in the middle and twisting them together to create the basic structure of the mermaid tail
6. Cover the wires with aluminum foil, using less aluminum foil at the tip and more as the tail approaches the body
7. Cover the aluminum foil with polymer or air-dry clay
8. Flatten and conceal the clay where it joins the doll’s belly using your finger or the back of a brush
9. Create two equal-sized clay balls to make the mermaid’s bra
10. Wrap the doll’s hair in painter’s tape to protect it from paint
11. Spray-paint it entirely in the color of your choice
12. From the bottom of the tail to the top, glue sequins to cover the area completely
13. Repeat the same process on the mermaid’s bra, covering it entirely with sequins
14. Combine four small pieces of wire, roll one end around itself, and separate the remaining four wire strands
15. Glue plastic wrap over them, both in front and behind
16. Trim the excess plastic wrap and seal the edges by applying heat
17. Using makeup, recolor the doll’s features and protect them with a thin layer of epoxy resin or clear nail polish
18. Add eyebrows, eyelashes, and give it a touch of shimmer using glittery eyeshadow or rhinestones
19. Your mermaid is now ready for an extra dramatic touch; you can place her inside a glass or a fish tank
