What To Do With Sarees
We might enjoy the comfort of wearing the same saree often, but as time passes, our favorite pieces start losing their shape and shade. The bigger the clothes, the more freedom you have to experiment with them.
In this article 5-Minute Crafts has gathered some unique ideas on how to upcycle old sarees into something beautiful.
1. Skirts
🟠Step 1: Pick a saree of your choice and fold it in half.
🟠Step 2: Take the bottom right corner of the fabric and bring it to the top side, making the fabric look folded in a triangular shape.
🟠Step 3: Fold it in half and measure 1 meter, which will be the length of the skirt.
🟠Step 4: Cut a quarter circle from the saree at the end of the measurement.
🟠Step 5: Cut another smaller quarter circle, at the top of the triangle, to make the opening of the skirt.
🟠Step 6: Fold 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the bottom of the skirt and sew it to the inside to prevent the fabric from coming off.
🟠Step 7: Fold 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the top part and stitch it, making a hole. Put an elastic band in the hole.
🟠Step 8: Sew the material together to make the skirt, and it’s ready!
2. Dress
🟠Step 1: Put the saree on a work table and fold it in half.
🟠Step 2: Measure the length of the skirt you want to have, and cut a quarter circle from the saree where the measurement ends.
🟠Step 3: Find the 90-degree angle and cut another smaller quarter circle to make the opening of the skirt.
🟠Step 4: Place the skirt on a sewing mannequin and leave it overnight.
🟠Step 5: Fold the saree at the top part and measure it by using an old shirt or dress.
🟠Step 6: Cut 2 pieces of the same pattern for the top part and sew them together.
🟠Step 7: Once the top is ready, sew the bottom of the dress that was placed on the mannequin.
🟠Step 8: Depending on how you would like the dress, you can add accessories or work on the sleeves.
3. Shirt
🟠 Step 1: Put the saree on a work table and fold the saree in half.
🟠 Step 2: Draw a shirt pattern on the saree by using the T-shirt of your choice. Make sure you leave a half-inch (1.30 cm) from the drawing pattern.
🟠 Step 3: Cut 2 identical pieces of the design.
🟠 Step 4: Connect the 2 side pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine, leaving the bottom and top of the shirt open.
🟠 Step 5: Add pearls to the shirt.
🟠 Step 6: The shirt is all ready!
4. Curtains
🟠 Step 1: Measure the length of the desired curtain.
🟠 Step 2: Mark the dimensions on both sides of the saree.
🟠 Step 3: Join the 2 marked dots from each side to create a line and cut it.
🟠 Step 4: Measure one inch (2.5 cm) from the bottom of the saree and fold it.
🟠 Step 5: Sew the ends to prevent loose ends from coming off.
🟠 Step 6: Fold 4 inches (10 cm) from the top of the saree and stitch them together making a hole for the curtain rod.
🟠 Step 7: Put the curtains on the rod and they are all ready!
5. Pillow
🟠 Step 1: Chose the saree you want to turn into a pillow case and fold it in half.
🟠 Step 2: Put one pillow on the saree and cut 2 inches (5 cm) bigger than the pillow.
🟠 Step 3: Start sewing the 2 halves from all sides.
🟠 Step 4: Leave a small opening on one side, so you can flip the pillowcase to the other side.
🟠 Step 5: Once you are done, flip the pillow cover. Put a pillow or stuffing inside the pillow cover.
🟠 Step 6: Sew the opened pocket or glue it using a glue gun. The pillow is ready!
6. Tote bags
🟠 Step 1: Measure 2 rectangular pieces from the saree with dimensions 16 in x12 in (40×30 cm).
🟠 Step 2: Place them one above the other and sew their left, right, and bottom sides. The top part should be open.
🟠 Step 3: Flip the fabric from the other side by pushing it into the opening.
🟠 Step 4: Sew the fabric on the same sides again.
🟠 Step 5: Once you are done, flip the fabric back again.
🟠 Step 6: Cut the handles from the pieces of the saree you have left before. You will need 2 rectangles with dimensions of 4 in x 25 in (10 cm x 63.5 cm).
🟠 Step 7: Take one of the handles and fold it in half. Iron it so there is a middle line.
🟠 Step 8: Fold the top and the bottom sides in half and then fold them again.
🟠 Step 9: Sew the halves together. Do the same with the other handle.
🟠 Step 10: Fold the ends of the top side and iron them. Place the handles on each piece on the top side and sew them together.
🟠 Step 11: The bag is ready!
