How to Grow Your Own Garden at Home: 9 Plants

Taking care of your own garden can be a relaxing experience and a great mood-booster. But if you don’t have plenty of space to grow your plants, don’t worry — there are many ways to turn your house into a garden and even grow your own food at the same time. 5-Minute Crafts has picked out the quickest ways to plant and harvest popular foods at home without putting in too much effort.

What you’ll need:

  • Carrots
  • A container filled with water
  • A pot
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Take carrots and cut off their upper parts starting about 2 inches below the stem.

2. Put these carrot tops in the container and fill it with water to slightly cover the carrots.

3. Keep the container in a sunny place and change the water every day. Wait for the carrot tops to sprout.

4. Plant the carrot tops in the pot and water them.

5. Keep the pot in a sunny place and water your carrots regularly. When the carrots grow a bit, harvest them whenever you like (some people like baby carrots while others prefer to let them grow fully).

What you’ll need:

  • The lower part of the celery
  • A bowl filled with water
  • A pot
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Cut off the lower part of the celery with a knife.

2. Put it in the bowl filled with water and place the bowl somewhere with good natural lighting. Change the water every couple of days.

3. Wait for the new celery leaves and roots to grow. Your goal is to grow the roots that are about an inch long.

4. When the roots are long enough, plant the celery in a pot and water it.

5. Keep the pot in a cool place and avoid direct sunlight. Water it regularly to keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering your plant.

When your plant gets big enough, harvest the outer stalks and let the inner ones grow.

What you’ll need:

  • A ginger root
  • A bowl filled with water
  • Pots
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Take a ginger root and chop it into large pieces.

  • If you want to grow just one plant, use only one ginger piece.

2. Soak the ginger pieces in water for a day.

3. Remove ginger pieces from the water and plant them in different pots. Don’t forget to water the soil.

4. Keep the pots in a warm place and avoid direct sunlight. Water your plants regularly and use special fertilizer if necessary. The plants will be ready to harvest in 8-10 months.

What you’ll need:

  • An avocado seed
  • 3 toothpicks
  • A glass of water
  • A pot
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Remove the avocado seed from the flesh.

2. Peel the seed until you remove its skin completely.

3. Insert 3 toothpicks in the middle part of the seed. The toothpicks should be evenly spaced around the circumference of the avocado seed.

4. Put the seed in a glass of water. The seed should be only half-submerged in the water. Make sure that the pointier side of your seed is facing up.

5. Change the water regularly and wait for the seed to sprout. Your goal is to grow the root and wait until the stem is about 5 inches tall. This process may take up to 8 weeks.

6. When your stem is long enough, plant the seed in a pot.

7. Keep your plant in a sunny place and water it regularly. It may take up to 5-13 years for an avocado tree to start growing fruit, so be patient or just enjoy how this plant looks.

What you’ll need:

  • A pumpkin
  • A spoon
  • Some soil
  • A large container (if don’t want to plant your pumpkin outside)

How to do it:

1. Take a pumpkin and cut off its lower part. The lower part should constitute about 1/3 of the pumpkin.

2. Use a spoon to separate the pumpkin seeds from the flesh. Leave the seeds inside the pumpkin.

3. Cover the seeds with soil and water them.

4. Keep watering the seeds regularly and wait for them to sprout.

  • When the sprouts look strong enough, plant them outside. Make sure you choose a sunny spot to plant them and leave enough space between the plants.

Note: You can grow pumpkins in a container but it should be a big one and you still need to put it outside.

5. Keep watering your pumpkin and use fertilizer if necessary. It takes about 3 months for a pumpkin to reach maturity, but this time may differ depending on the weather and the variety of the pumpkin.

What you’ll need:

  • A ripe tomato
  • A bowl of water
  • A pit
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Slice a ripe tomato.

2. Place the slices in the pot on top of the soil.

3. Cover the tomatoes with another layer of soil and water them.

4. Keep the pot in a sunny place and water the tomatoes regularly. The tomato seeds are likely to germinate within 5-10 days.

5. When the saplings grow long enough, plant them in different pots or in some soil outside.

6. Keep your tomatoes in a sunny place and water them regularly. You’ll get the first harvest in 2-3 months.

What you’ll need:

  • A potato
  • 2 pots
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Take a potato and cut it in half.

2. Put each half of the potato in a separate pot.

3. Cover the potato halves with soil and water them.

4. Keep your potatoes in a sunny place and water them regularly so that the soil stays moist. You can harvest your potatoes after the blooms appear and the leaves start to yellow.

What you’ll need:

  • Strawberries
  • A toothpick
  • A paper towel
  • A pot
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Pick out the strawberry seeds from the berry with a toothpick.

2. Place all the seeds on a paper towel and dry them a bit.

3. Plant the seeds in a pot filled with soil. Be careful and don’t cover the seeds with soil completely. You can plant the seeds in any pot of your choice.

4. Water the seeds well.

5. Keep the pot in a sunny place and make sure the soil is moist. When seeds sprout, transfer them into larger pots or plant them outside.

6. Make sure you keep your plants in a sunny place and continue to keep the soil moist. Harvest the strawberries when the berries turn red.

What you’ll need:

  • Raw peanuts in their shells
  • A piece of fabric
  • A glass of water
  • A pot
  • Some soil

How to do it:

1. Remove the peanuts from the shell and put them on a piece of fabric.

2. Wrap them in fabric and immerse them in water for 1 hour.

3. Take them out of the water and leave them on a dry surface for 3 days.

4. The peanuts should sprout by the fourth day.

5. Plant the sprouted peanuts in a pot with soil, cover them with another layer of soil, and water them. Place the pot in a sunny spot where there’s not too much wind, and water the plant regularly to keep the soil slightly moist.

6. The peanuts will be ready for harvest in 90-150 days. Pay attention to the foliage — when it turns yellow, it means that it’s time to harvest the peanuts.
