How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting for Cakes

Cream cheese frosting is one of the most popular frosting creams among pastry chefs. You can use it for cakes and cupcakes, and it’s solid enough to help you implement many culinary ideas.

5-Minute Crafts offers you the traditional recipe for cream cheese frosting that even an inexperienced baker can make.

Tools

To make cream cheese frosting, you will need:

  • a hand mixer

  • a bowl

  • a silicone spatula

Ingredients

  • 3.5 ounces of dairy butter

  • 3.5 ounces of powdered sugar

  • 10 ounces of cream cheese

  • Vanilla powder or vanilla extract

Additional ingredients for coloring:

  • Food coloring

  • Cocoa

The cooking process

  • Put cold dairy butter that has been cut into cubes and powdered sugar into a bowl.

  • Start whipping the butter and powdered sugar with the help of a mixer.

  • Important: the longer you whip the butter and powdered sugar, the whiter the cream will be. You won’t be able to rewhip the cream.

  • Add the cream cheese.

  • Whip the cream thoroughly to make it smooth.

  • At this stage, add a few drops of the vanilla extract for flavor.

  • You will get a thick cream.

  • Cream cheese is pretty solid, which is why it’s good for decorating different desserts — like cupcakes or layer cakes, for example.

  • The cream becomes tastier after cooling, that is why cream cheese deserts should be stored in the fridge.

  • When storing in the fridge, keep the deserts in a sealed container to prevent the cake from absorbing the smells of other foods.

Bonus: How to make the cream colorful

  • There are a few ways to color cream cheese.

  • To color cream cheese with food coloring, choose the color first.

  • Add food coloring gradually starting with a few drops if it’s gel food coloring, or a few grains if it’s dry food coloring.

  • After adding the coloring, whip the cream with the mixer until it is a smooth, even color.

  • Add a bit more coloring if necessary and whip the cream again.

  • To make the cream taste and look like chocolate, use cocoa.

  • Use 2 ounces of cocoa for 20 ounces of cream.

  • When choosing cocoa, choose unsweetened cocoa powder.

  • Whip the cream and cocoa with the help of a mixer.
