How to Make Meringue

Meringue is a wonderful dessert. It only consists of 2 ingredients, the cooking process doesn’t take long and it can be stored for a long time. It’s a perfect alternative to sweets you can buy in a shop, and it will grace your festive holiday table.

At 5-Minute Crafts, we would like to offer you a classic recipe for meringue and a bunch of little secrets to make sure you do everything right.

Kitchen gear

  • A bowl

  • A mixer

  • A confectionery bag with a tip (optional)

  • A baking tray

  • Baking paper

Ingredients

  • 6 egg whites

  • 13 ounces of powdered sugar

The cooking process

  • Put the egg whites into a dry bowl. It’s worth using a glass or metal bowl. If you don’t have one, you can use a plastic bowl.

  • The bowl should be perfectly clean and dry.

  • To degrease the bowl, pour boiling water with a few drops of lemon juice inside.

  • The whites should be room temperature. The foam will be more voluminous and stable if the whites are warm.

  • Use the freshest eggs possible.

  • Begin whipping the whites.

  • Use a low-speed on the mixer to saturate the egg whites with oxygen.

  • Then increase the speed slowly, and don’t decrease it.

  • When the whites become white and foam starts forming, start to add the powdered sugar. Add sugar slowly without stopping the mixer.

  • Whip the whites and sugar on high speed for a few minutes until the foam begins to form stiff peaks (like in the photo above).

  • You can add food coloring if you’d like.

  • Put the mass into a confectionery bag. Single-use confectionery bags that you can buy in a confectionery store is the most convenient option.

  • Place the bag inside a cup and put the foam inside the bag with a spoon. It’s much easier this way.

  • Tie the back end of the bag, or use a clip for plastic bags.

  • Put the meringues on a baking tray covered with a sheet of baking paper.

  • You can place meringues close to each other because they will not change their size during baking.

  • If you don’t have a confectionery bag, or you don’t want to spend time trying to figure out how to use one, you can form meringues with the help of a table spoon (as shown in the photo above).

  • Bake meringues in an oven that has been preheated to 230°F, for 1 hour.

  • You can’t open the oven door during baking.

  • You can serve meringues right after you take them out of the oven.

  • It’s recommended to store meringues in a sealed container in a dry place.
