10 Models Who Are Not Afraid to Show Their True Selves
We often hear the saying “no one is perfect” and then flip the pages of fashion magazines and see many gorgeous people with seemingly no imperfections. Flawless skin with no acne, wrinkles, stretch marks, or cellulite and having smooth hair and thin waists are the beauty goals many women are trying to achieve. However, the truth is that even models deal with things that society perceives as flaws.
5-Minute Crafts decided to make a list of celebrities who are not afraid to show their real selves and set new beauty standards.
1. Kendall Jenner
Kendall shared in one of her Instagram posts how having imperfect skin affected her confidence. “It’s something that I’ve dealt with since I was a young teen and it has caused me to feel anxious, helpless, and insecure,” she wrote. After trying countless products, she finally found the ones that keep her skin clean, which made her more confident.
2. Taylor Hill
Hill is a young American model who has appeared in magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar but still struggles with breakouts. She often shares photos of her natural skin on her Instagram account and raises awareness about pimples and acne. In one of her interviews, she shares that she has had acne problems since she was 15 and that she is still working on it.
“And if I still break out, what am I going to do? I wash my face before I go to bed. I get facials and I see a dermatologist. But if it’s still happening, then I just have to embrace it and let it do its thing because it’s a part of life,” Taylor said.
3. Gisele Bündchen
The former Victoria’s Secret Angel shared in one of her interviews, that her modeling career didn’t start off great. “I remember some people telling me my nose was too big or my eyes were too small, that I could never be on a magazine cover,” she said. Gisele also added that the criticism took a toll on her and she had issues with her confidence. Luckily, her dad had great advice for her: “Next time, tell them, I have a big nose and that comes with a big personality,” she remembers.
4. Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum is also a successful supermodel who had difficulties at the beginning of her career. She shared that even though she was thinner then, designers often commented that she was too big and curvy. “I was landing money jobs but was desperate to be booked for cooler gigs. I tried to fit into the clothes, but I couldn’t,” she said.
5. Kate Moss
Cellulite is completely normal and common, but society often views it as something that is undesirable. Women are continue to try different methods to reduce the lumpy skin on their bodies, although the results are not long-lasting and even models like Kate Moss are not immune to having it.
6. Jessica Hart
Gap teeth were maybe considered a flaw before, but now they are actually becoming a trend. Some people even go as far as to have reverse dentistry work to make their teeth happier. However, for some people, that isn’t something that they find odd, like with the example of model Jessica Hart.
"It’s such a funny thing because I’ve never known any other way. If I step outside of myself and look back, I’m like, “Oh, it’s a crazy thing. I have a gap in my teeth!” It’s one of those things that’s just so normal to me. I’ve never felt like it’s something to feel ashamed of or to have “fixed,” Jessica said.
7. Josephine Skriver
Beauty standards are constantly changing and most of them often don’t even make sense, for example, hip dips. You maybe haven’t even heard about them or didn’t consider them a flaw since they are completely normal and predetermined by your genetics and build. Some people have hip bones that are placed a bit higher up, which causes a bit of a curve between them and the femur bone and that curve is called a hip dip. Lately, many women are trying to correct them and view them as imperfections, even though you actually can’t get rid of them. However, there are models who are not afraid to show their figures and normalize their body structure. Josephine Skriver is one of Victoria’s Secret’s models and often poses showing her hip dips.
8. Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid, alongside her sister Gigi, is another successful supermodel. But, she wasn’t so confident about herself when she was a teen. In one of the interviews, she admitted to having nose surgery which she regretted later. “I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors. I think I would have grown into it,” Bella said.
9. Tyra Banks
Tyra revealed that many people commented on her looks when she entered the world of fashion. “When I turned into a supermodel, a lot of people were saying, ‘She cute, but she got a big forehead,’” she said. However, that didn’t stop her from achieving her dream. While some people will consider that a flaw, Tyra is thankful for her distinctive feature as she believes that it is something that helped her achieve success in her career.
“If I didn’t have a high forehead, I would’ve been too safe-looking and too commercial-looking, and I wouldn’t have been able to have the high-fashion career that I started with,” Banks stated.
10. Ashley Graham
Graham is a plus-size supermodel who feels comfortable in her skin and often shares unfiltered images of her body. She is very into changing the standards of beauty and speaks about body positivity and accepting our “flaws.” She is not afraid to show her stretchmarks and cellulite.
“A lot of women I speak to have image issues, body issues around confidence. I want them to understand that we all have things that society has told us to cover up and why do we need to do that? So here I am with mine out and about and proud,” she said in her interview.
Bonus: How other models cope with their insecurities
Lily-Rose Depp
Lily-Rose Depp is also the child of 2 famous parents, and she is following in her mom’s footsteps by becoming a model. She noted that, like many other people, she has insecurities, and that is normal. Lily-Rose went on to say that her mother, Vanessa Paradis, taught her a lot about confidence and feeling comfortable on sets. However, she is also focusing on things that are not connected with her physical appearance.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m trying to focus more on who I am, and like, cultivating my brain and my knowledge. Being a smart person and a kind person is more important than being a beautiful person,” she concluded.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a successful model and an actress but even she doesn’t always feel so confident. She admits that she needs a lot of time and work on just one photo that she’ll post on her Instagram account. Rosie also added that many girls look up to models and understands that they might not feel very good in their own skin when they are scrolling through a bunch of perfectly posed images. “I can’t say that I’m immune to that,” she said when commenting about images of other beautiful women. “Sometimes I’m like, ’You know? That doesn’t make me feel great,’” Rosie added.
