How to Get Rid of Chapped Lips

Unlike the skin that covers the rest of your body, the skin on your lips doesn’t have oil glands to produce oils that could prevent it from drying out. This is why your lips need extra care, especially in cold temperatures, during sun exposure, and in some other cases. In this article, 5-Minute Crafts will show you a few ways to soothe your chapped lips naturally.

❗ If your lips don’t get better after 2-3 weeks of using home remedies, see your dermatologist.

1. Choose lip balm with moisturizing ingredients.

Use non-irritating hypoallergenic lip balm, lipstick, and other products that contain ceramides, dimethicone, hemp seed oil, or petroleum.

⛔ Avoid lip products that contain camphor, eucalyptus, menthol, octinoxate or oxybenzone, phenol or phenyl, propyl gallate, salicylic acid, artificial flavors, and scents, as they can dry out your lips even more.

Apply your lip balm 6-8 times a day — in the morning, before going to bed, and every couple of hours during the day.

✅ Always use lip balm before you put on lipstick or lip gloss, not after.

⛔ If you feel discomfort (burning, stinging, or tingling) after applying your lip balm, your lips might be irritated. In this case, stop using the product right away.

2. Apply petroleum jelly.

✅ Apply a layer of petroleum jelly after applying your lip balm. This will help you lock the moisture in your lips more effectively.

3. Protect your lips when you’re outdoors.

Use a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors, even in the winter.

Wear a scarf or ski mask that covers your mouth when you go out in the cold weather.

4. Exfoliate your lips with sugar and honey.

Take 1 tbsp of sugar and 1 tbsp of honey and mix them well in a bowl.

✅ Take a cotton swab and dip it into the mixture.

✅ Using the cotton swab, gently rub your lips with the scrub in a circular motion.

✅ Wipe the excess scrub off your lips with a damp washcloth.

5. Try some home remedies.

✅ Apply coconut oil to your lips using a cotton swab or a clean finger, and gently dab it onto the lips. Repeat as many times as necessary throughout the day.

✅ Cut a leaf off the aloe vera plant and slice it open to scoop out the gel. Apply the gel directly to your lips with your fingers 2-3 times a day.

6. Don’t eat citrus fruits.

Avoid eating acidic citrus fruits, as their juice can sting your lips.

7. Stop licking your lips.

⛔ Don’t lick, bite, or pick at your lips; these actions can only make your lips drier and irritate them.

✅ Every time you catch yourself licking your lips, try applying a lip balm instead.

8. Breathe through your nose.

⛔ Don’t breathe through your mouth. This can cause your lips to dry out.

✅ Focus on breathing through your nose instead.
