How to Take Care of Your Skin

Creams, toners, serums, foams, and masks — store shelves are full of facial skincare products, and you can easily get confused by them. Everyone’s situation is different, and everyone can choose the most suitable method of skincare. Nevertheless, there are a few basic rules that will help you avoid making mistakes in your skincare routine.

5-Minute Crafts would like to share some basic principles of how to take care of your skin, including what products to choose, in which order they should be applied, what products aren’t necessary, and what you should keep in mind.

Skin types

In order to choose the correct skincare routine, you should define your skin type.

Dry skin:

  • It’s flaky.
  • It can become rough.

Oily skin:

  • It’s shiny.
  • It has enlarged pores.

Combination skin:

  • It’s dry in some areas and oily in others (often in the areas on the forehead, nose, and chin).

Sensitive skin:

  • It can get irritated by different cosmetic products.

Normal skin:

  • It’s balanced.
  • It’s clear.
  • It’s not sensitive.

Cleansing

Normal and combination skin:

  • Choose a product that suits you best, whether it be foam, milk, or special facial soap.
  • Don’t use an exfoliant.
  • Rinse your face with plenty of water.
  • If your skin becomes dry or oily, change your product.

Dry skin:

  • Don’t use products containing alcohol and fragrances.
  • Rinse your face with plenty of water.
  • Don’t wash your face with hot water.
  • Don’t use an exfoliant more often than once a week. It will gently remove dead skin cells and make your skin glow. Choose a product designed for your skin type.

Oily skin:

  • Choose an oil-free foaming cleanser to wash your face.
  • Wash your face with warm water.
  • Rinse your face with plenty of water.
  • Use a toner after washing to make your skin matte.

Sensitive skin:

  • Use products for sensitive skin only.
  • Wash your face with warm water.
  • Rinse your face with plenty of water.
  • Don’t rub your face with a towel.
  • Don’t use products that contain alcohol, soap, acids, or fragrances.
  • Choose products with soothing ingredients, like aloe, camomile, green tea, polyphenols, and oats.

Toner

  • A facial toner helps to balance your skin.
  • Apply the toner with a cotton pad or just with your palms.
  • Apply the toner after washing your face and before using a moisturizer or serum.

Serum

  • Apply serum to your face after using the facial toner.
  • Do this with your fingertips or palms.
  • Don’t rub it in too hard.
  • Don’t use more serum than necessary.
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully.
  • After applying the serum, wait 5 minutes for it to be absorbed.
  • Then you can move on to the moisturizing stage.

Moisturizing

  • Your skin requires daily moisturizing.
  • Use a moisturizer after cleansing the skin and applying a toner.
  • If your skin is oily, use oil-free moisturizing products.

Sunscreen

  • It’s recommended to use sunscreen every day.
  • Use products with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Apply sunscreen every day, even if it’s not sunny and even if it’s cold.

Washing up

  • To avoid making your skin dry, don’t wash your face too often.
  • In the morning, simply rinse your face with warm water.
  • In the evening, wash your face with a special cleanser.
  • If necessary, wash off your makeup first.
  • If you exercise, it’s okay to wash your face with a cleanser after training to keep your pores from clogging.
  • Never go to bed without removing your makeup.
  • If you use acne treatment products, apply them before going bed, just after washing your face.

In which order you need to use skincare products

Keep in mind that this list shows the order of skincare products you can use. If you don’t use any of these products, just skip it and move on to the next product.

  • Cleanser
  • Exfoliant
  • Toner
  • Treatment products (such as acne treatment)
  • Face serum
  • Eye cream
  • Moisturizer
  • Facial oil
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Makeup

What products you should use in the daytime and in the evening

There are 2 strict rules:

  • You should apply sunscreen in the morning, which is logical because its purpose is to protect your skin from the sun.
  • Retinol-containing products should be applied in the evening.

How often you should use skincare products

Every day:

  • Cleanser
  • Serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye cream
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup remover
  • Night cream
