How to Take Care of a New Tattoo

Taking care of your tattoo right after you get it is important if you want it to heal fast. To help you with that, 5-Minute Crafts has created a list of things that you can do for a smoother recovery.

First day

1. Make sure the tattoo artist applies a layer of petroleum jelly.

After leaving the studio, your tattoo artist should apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on your fresh tattoo.

2. Leave the studio with a bandage around the tattoo.

Your tattoo artist should be responsible for doing this. Make sure you leave the studio with a bandage around your tattoo, so it is protected.

3. After a few hours, gently wash the tattoo.

After leaving your bandage on your tattoo for a few hours, wash the tattoo area gently with fragrance-free soap and water.

Following days

4. Apply an anti-bacterial cream.

You should apply this twice a day to keep your tattoo free of bacteria. Don’t put on another bandage.

5. Continue washing the tattoo.

You should continue the process of washing it with antimicrobial soap and water twice a day. Always make sure to pat it dry.

6. Apply moisturizer.

After you wash your tattoo, you should always apply moisturizer to keep that area moist. The same goes for washing, you should do it twice a day. Repeat this process for 2-4 weeks until you see that the tattoo is fully healed.

7. Avoid scratching it.

Your tattoo might become itchy or develop hard layers, but you should never, at any moment, scratch it. It will only make it easier to get an infection and for the color to fade.

8. Avoid swimming and the sun.

For the first 2 weeks, don’t swim or stay under the sun or you may damage your tattoo due to exposure.
