5 Mistakes to Avoid When Receiving Guests at Home

Having your home well-prepared upon hosting a guest for the first time can be really stressful, and making a good atmosphere may affect how that person will feel about you further. Practicing good hospitality is not the only way to make guests feel at home. The first impression is the most important part, as people will remember it forever.

5-Minute Crafts listed common mistakes to help guide you through the process.

1. The guest room isn’t ready.

The guest room, in most homes, is often repurposed to be an extra storage room. Try to have that area clean before the guests arrive. Remove all your personal things from the room and change the essentials. Put new towels in the cabinet, prepare the bed with clean bed sheets, and clean the bathroom. You can add scented candles, oils, or air fresheners to make the room smell fresh. Try to form a welcoming feeling in the house.

2. You don’t give them basic information.

Make sure to give them your phone number and the Wi-Fi password. If the guests are planning to spend more than a couple of days at your place, leave them a key and the alarm code so they can come and go whenever they’d like.

3. You don’t anticipate the guests’ needs.

Have everything your guests may need on hand. Put additional blankets, towels, and pillows in the room so they can feel cared for and cozy. If the visitors were traveling by airplane, fill the bathroom with extra necessities, like razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

4. You don’t use new sheets.

Don’t put old sheets or towels in the guest room. If you really want to make a good impression, give them the newest set of linens you have or splurge on fresh ones. Try to iron the pillowcases if you want them to look nice and neat.

5. You don’t prepare any welcome snacks.

Your guests may be hungry after their trip, so make them something basic, like a sandwich and a glass of juice to freshen them up. Also, a welcome note can be a nice gesture. You don’t need to write anything complicated, just something simple to get the job done.
