How to Fix a Squeaky Door

Squeaky doors can become very annoying, especially when you’re trying to sleep or focus on something important. This common problem may be caused by friction between the hinge’s metal surfaces. Friction can derive from the lack of lubrication or the accumulation of dust or dirt. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to fix this issue and make your home quiet again.

5-Minute Crafts will show you how to get rid of noisy doors using easy-to-find products.

1. Hairspray

Using hairspray is an easy way to fix a squeaking door, as it has polymers that cover the door hinges and stop them from squeaking and moving around.

How to use it:

  1. Spray the product on the hinge a couple of times.
  2. Open and close the door so that the product spreads around.

Keep in mind that this is a short-term solution. Therefore, you may want to look for other alternatives for a permanent fix.

2. Baby powder

Talcum or baby powder is another quick solution for squeaky doors.

How to use it:

  1. Spread some baby powder on the door hinges.
  2. Rub the product into the hinge crevices by using an old toothbrush.

3. Bar of soap

Fats and oils in bar soaps can help lubricate hinges and stop them from squeaking. For better results, opt for organic products with a high quantity of fat in them.

Rub the bar soap against the hinges until they get a full coat. Make sure that the soap bar is slightly damp before applying it.

4. Petroleum jelly

Due to its oily properties, petroleum jelly can be a good lubricant and an easy way to get rid of noisy doors. Rub a small amount of it on the outside of hinges until the product does its job.

If the door is too squeaky or the previous technique doesn’t work, take out the hinge pin and coat it in petroleum jelly before reinserting it.

5. Olive oil

Olive oil can be also helpful for fixing noisy doors. You can either use a pipette to apply a few drops directly onto the hinges or follow these steps:

  1. Clean the hinge thoroughly with a piece of cloth to remove any dust.
  2. Apply olive oil all over it with a brush or a piece of cloth.

Make sure you don’t apply too much oil, as it can become rancid if dirt builds up on it.

6. Paraffin candle

Wax can be an excellent lubricant for squeaky hinges. When fixing your door, go for a white candle so that the wax doesn’t look so prominent after applying it.

How to use it:

  1. Hammer out the hinge pin.
  2. Light the candle and carefully coat the pin in the melted wax.
  3. Put the pin back in the hinge.

You can also rub the candle against the hinge until it has covered all the joints. However, the previous technique may ensure that the door is silent for longer.

7. Silicone spray

This product is great for fixing noisy doors. Moreover, it is free from grease and mineral oils and can act as a lubricant on different surfaces, such as rubber, plastic, and metal.

How to use it:

  1. Take out the pin and apply silicone spray on the hinge. Catch any excess of liquid with a cloth.
  2. Spray the pin and reinsert it into the hinge.
