How to Get Rid of Cockroaches With Homemade Remedies and Natural Products
There are many products available in stores for getting rid of cockroaches, but they may be toxic for your children, your pets, and for you. However, there are also natural remedies that can help you keep these insects away from your home without harming your family or the environment.
5-Minute Crafts recommends some homemade remedies that are useful for chasing cockroaches away.
1. Vinegar
Procedure:
Mix water and vinegar in equal quantities. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe all bathroom surfaces, floors, bathtub, door frames, and windows. Vinegar is a disinfectant that gets rid of any smell that can attract cockroaches but, at the same time, its own smell will keep these insects away from any entryways to your home.
2. Bay leaves and garlic
Procedure:
Place some laurel leaves or cloves of garlic in any place in your house where there might be insects. Rosemary may also be useful. Laurel leaves and garlic are elements that we all have at home and that come in handy to repel any unwanted visitors.
3. Lavender and catmint
Procedure:
It’s a good idea to have them at home. If you live in an apartment, you can place these plants on the balcony or in flowerpots close to those places where insects can be found. Lavender and catmint are powerful repellents that are useful not only against cockroaches but also against mosquitoes.
4. Baking soda and sugar
Procedure:
A great way to get rid of cockroaches is to mix baking soda and sugar in equal quantities and to place this mixture behind the furniture. Don’t forget to put it behind the fridge and oven, since these insects usually hide near any sources of heat.
5. Orange oil
Procedure:
If you live in a house and have lots of plants, then you should prepare a mixture combining 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, 1 oz (30 ml) of orange oil, and 135 oz (4 L) of water. Spray the mixture onto the plants to chase cockroaches and ants away.
Suggestions
-
Try to find their hiding spots. During the day they are usually in dark and damp places, which are difficult to reach. They may also be found in drainpipes, basements, and under wooden floors.
-
Don’t leave any food or food scraps lying around. Try to keep your house clean, especially your kitchen. Take out the garbage every day. If you’re going on vacation, spend some time cleaning your house thoroughly and, if possible, keep the floors free from any objects.
