How to Make Your Bed
Making your bed can help your entire bedroom look a lot more neat and clean, and it’s a daily habit most people have. It might sound like a simple task, but doing it in the proper way can actually involve a little practice before getting it just right.
5-Minute Crafts has prepared a useful step-by-step guide on how to do it quickly and efficiently.
Bed layers and how to layer them
Before making your bed, take a look at the picture above to understand the correct order of all the layers of your bedding.
Step 1
First, clear off the bed. Grab your duvet, pillows, blankets, and put them aside on a chair or another piece of furniture for now.
Step 2
Now, it’s time to layer everything back in, starting with the sheets. Most fitted sheets have elastic corners, so it’s easier. But if yours doesn’t, don’t worry, the process is the same.
Place one corner of the sheet over the top edge by the head of the bed, and then extend it to the other side. Do the same at the foot of the bed. Keep going until all 4 corners are securely fitted.
Note: Make sure the sheet is sitting smoothly on top of the mattress, without any wrinkles or creases.
Step 3
Next, the top sheet. Grab it and place it over the fitted sheet, but make sure that both sides of the bed have equal amounts of material hanging down the sides. Now, you can tuck the sheet under the mattress at the foot of the bed and along the sides, or even better, create hospital corners.
Step 4
How to make hospital corners. This term came from the way hospital beds were made. The trick was then adopted by hotels, because it makes the bed look tidy and well-kept.
How to do it:
- At the foot of the bed, tuck the end of the sheet between the mattress and the box spring or frame.
- Now, there should be excess of fabric hanging down from each side of the bed. Lift part of the material and lay it on the surface, as seen above. Be sure to straighten out any creases.
- After doing that, tuck the dangling sheet underneath the mattress.
- Lastly, notice that there’s a triangular piece of fabric left. Tuck it underneath as well. If you see a nice and clean seam, good job!
Step 5
Grab your duvet and place it evenly on top of the sheets with the same amount of overhang on each side of the bed.
Note: If you use a blanket, place it on top of the duvet.
Step 6
Now that everything is in place, fold part of the top sheet over the duvet. It’s not necessary to fold the duvet or blanket.
Step 7
Finally, grab your pillows and position them in the middle of the headboard. The number of pillows is totally up to you.
