How to Make Your Bed More Comfortable

Your bed is likely not only a place where you get a good night’s sleep, but also where you can relax, read an excellent book, or watch your favorite TV shows. As these activities can result in spending quite a lot of time lying on this piece of furniture, it’s important to make it as cozy as possible.

5-Minute Crafts will give you some tips to make your bed even comfier than it already is.

1. Rotate or turn your mattress.

Many mattresses come with a top layer that doesn’t require flipping. However, it’s also possible that your mattress doesn’t have this feature, nor a defined bottom or top.

If that’s the case, flipping and rotating your mattress regularly can help each side be equally used and prevent its springs from wearing faster at one end. At the same time, this will lower the risk of getting uncomfortable lumps and extend the life span of your mattress.

2. Choose the right pillow.

Getting the right pillow can make a huge difference in your quality of sleep, as it helps your spine stay aligned. Moreover, a pillow that provides a healthy posture can prevent you from waking up in pain in the morning since it gives your shoulders, neck, back, and hips the support they require.

Although the type of pillow you opt for is mainly based on your personal preference, getting the right one can depend on your sleeping position, as this can determine how much support you will need from the pillow. Therefore, it’s smart to consider the following information to make sure you go for the right choice.

  • Back sleepers: Your pillow should provide support to your neck and head, but be sure to avoid your neck being positioned at an unnatural angle. Therefore, it’s advisable to get a medium-thick pillow that’s not too flat or too full.
  • Side sleepers: Your pillow should hold your head, making sure it’s in a neutral position so that it’s aligned with the spine. Since your shoulder gets most of the pressure when you’re sleeping on your side, the best choice is a fuller, firmer pillow that takes some of this weight off.
  • Sleeping on your stomach: This position is considered the most stressful one for your neck and back, so it’s advisable to try and get yourself used to sleeping in a different position. However, in the meantime, you should opt for a softer pillow that is a little less full, as this will help your spine stay as neutral as possible.

At the same time, it’s important to find the right pillow size. In the chart above, you will see the recommended sizes according to height, body type, the distance between your neck and shoulder, and sleeping position.

3. Say no to fitted sheets.

Since mattresses have different depths, fitted sheets may not fit as they’re supposed to, making your bed look bad and uncomfortable. Therefore, it’s advisable to use a large flat sheet and tuck it as tight as possible around the mattress. If necessary, get a sheet that is one size above your mattress.

You can make hospital corners to make sure that your flat bottom sheet fits perfectly around your mattress. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Place the sheet down and tuck it in at the bottom end, making sure it’s smooth and tight.
  2. Take the bottom end and fold it up as in the image, creating a crease along the upper edge of your mattress.
  3. Tuck in the hanging part of the sheet.
  4. Fold over the top drape and tuck it in.

4. Make sure you’re using the right bedding.

If you tend to feel too hot under the covers, breathable materials will permit air to flow and keep your body at a comfortable temperature. The best options are usually made of natural materials, like organic cotton and silk. At the same time, these can absorb sweat to provide extra comfort.

On the other hand, thicker sheets can be a better choice if you usually feel cold while sleeping. In this case, flannel sheets can do the trick, as these will give you the warmth you may need.

💡 Place a throw at the end of your bed. Spread a cotton or wool throw blanket across the bottom end of your bed. Use a cozy, soft blanket, like a chunky knit for fall or winter nights or a lightweight blanket for warmer seasons.

5. Get a bolster and nonslip casters.

If you enjoy reading in bed or leaning against the headboard, place a bolster on the corner where the mattress and the headboard meet. Not only will it feel good, but it also means no extra work since it’s not necessary to move it to make the bed.

At the same time, it’s advisable to put nonslip casters under the feet of your bed to make sure that it doesn’t move.

6. Ditch the top sheet.

Instead, place a comforter inside a linen duvet cover to use the cover as a top sheet. When you have a duvet, the top sheet may end up wrapping itself around your legs while you’re sleeping and finally get untucked. Therefore, the best thing is to eliminate it.

💡 As a bonus, removing the top sheet will help you make your bed faster in the morning.
