How to House Train Your Dog

It takes between 4 to 6 months to get your dog fully trained to go to the bathroom at the right time and place. 5-Minute Crafts has listed things you can teach your dog so it learns how to behave in the most efficient way.

1. Keep it on a feeding schedule.

Feed the dog at the same time every day and make sure to take the bowl away between meals. Feed your dog 3 to 4 times a day.

2. Take your dog outside first thing in the morning.

Your dog can hold it for a few hours but they will need to go to the bathroom in the morning. Take them outside right after you wake up.

3. Take the dog outside between 5 to 30 min after every meal.

This is very important, especially if your dog is still a puppy as they can’t hold that much.

4. Take it to the same spot.

When your dog needs to go potty, assign it a spot and always take the dog to that same area. The dog will establish the habit of eliminating in the same place.

5. Reward them immediately.

Praise your dog every time they go to the bathroom outside in the assigned place. Give it treats as rewards immediately after they do it so that they know they’re doing the right thing.

6. Use key words.

Choose key words or phrases to alert your dog that it’s okay to go to the bathroom. This way, they’ll get used to doing it only after you’ve told them to.

7. Put your dog’s water dish away.

This will prevent your dog from needing to go to the bathroom during the night. Do it 2.5 hours before bedtime.

8. Understand your dog’s behavior by supervising them.

Always try to supervise your dog’s behavior so you understand the signs of when they want to go outside, such as:

  • scratching the door
  • barking
  • squatting
  • sniffing around
  • circling
