How to Know the Difference Between Car Body Styles

Modern cars come in a lot of different shapes. And every single one of them has its own features and names.

Together with 5-Minute Crafts, you will find out about the differences between the different body styles of cars.

Sedan

The sedan is one of the most popular car types. These cars have 2 full rows of seats and 4 doors. The roof in sedan cars is at the same height along the entire length of the car. The inside of the car is isolated from the trunk and the engine.

Coupé

Coupé cars have 2 doors and 2 or 4 seats. The front part of the car is a bit longer than the back. Very often, these are sports cars that have smooth roofs and very powerful engines.

Wagon

The wagon is a car body type with a flat roof and a sloping back door. These cars usually have either 5 or 3 doors. The trunk is together with the passenger compartment, so there may be more seats.

Hatchback

Hatchback cars have an additional door in the back and the trunk is united with the passenger compartment. There are 2-4 doors and 2 rows of seats. The back seats can be folded, so more cargo can be transported.

Hatchbacks are different from wagons because they have smaller trunks.

Off-road

Off-road cars are among the biggest and the most powerful cars. They are big, they have a high clearance, and they can transport a lot of cargo. They have massive front parts. There are models that have 3 rows of chairs and can transport 7-8 people at the same time.

SUV

An SUV is a mix of a hatchback, a wagon, and an off-road car. They are often quite big, have a high clearance, and a big inner compartment. But like hatchbacks and wagons, they are easy to control and they don’t use as much fuel as off-road cars. In terms of appearance, they look like smaller off-road cars.

Pickup

Pickups are a lot like off-road cars but in the back, they have an open area to transport a lot of stuff. Pickups have a closed compartment, 2 or 4 doors, and also 2 or 4 seats inside.

Cabriolet

Cabriolets are cars with removable roofs. They can be soft and made of fabric or they may be firmer and folded by hand or with a special mechanism.

Limo

Limos have the longest bodies among all cars and they are really easy to identify. They look like longer sedans but they also have a glass wall that separates the driver from the other passengers.

Minivan

Minivans are big cars that can transport up to 9 people. They have big compartments with 3 or 4 rows of seats. The roofs of minivans are high and straight and there’s an additional back door in the back. The chairs can be transformed and turned into a sleeping area inside the car if needed.
