How to Clean a Hairbrush

We use hairbrushes every day and sometimes we have no idea how dirty they can be. On the surface, there can be a lot of grease, dust, and skin particles that later get on our hair, potentially causing dandruff and other unpleasant problems. But all of this can be avoided if you clean your hairbrushes regularly.

5-Minute Crafts is going to tell you how to rid your hairbrush of grease and dirt quickly and effectively.

How to clean a plastic brush or plastic massage brush

Plastic hairbrushes are the easiest to clean because the materials they’re made of don’t absorb grease and dirt and they react well to water and cleaning agents.

Way № 1:

  • You’ll need hot water, dish soap, and an old toothbrush.
  • Remove the hair from the brush. If the hair is hard to get out, use a toothbrush.

  • Pour enough hot water into a deep bowl — enough to cover the entire brush or at least its upper part.

  • Add 1 tbsp of dish soap into the bowl. Stir the water.

  • Leave the brush in the water for 20-30 minutes to wet the dirt and grease on its surface.

  • Take the brush out of the water and remove the dirt between the bristles using an old toothbrush.

  • Wash the brush in cold water and let it dry.

Way № 2:

  • You’ll need 2 tbsp of soda, 1 tbsp of vinegar, 4 to 6 cups of water, and a toothbrush.

  • Remove as much hair from the brush as possible.

  • Mix soda with vinegar and mix it all with water.

  • Put the brush into the mix so that the bristles are underwater. Let it soak in the mix.

  • 10-15 minutes later, take the brush and remove the dirt with an old toothbrush, and then wash the brush in clean, cold water.

  • Wipe the clean brush with a towel and dry it.

Way № 3:

  • You’ll need shaving foam, water, and an old toothbrush.

  • Put a lot of shaving foam on a massage hairbrush and leave it like this for 15-20 minutes.

  • Clean the dirt with a toothbrush.

  • Wash the brush with water and wipe it with a towel.

How to clean a wooden comb

Wooden combs, unlike plastic ones, can’t be soaked in water because they might deform. Also, you can’t use any aggressive cleaning agents on them.

Way № 1:

  • In a bowl, mix 1 tbsp of shampoo or dish soap and 4 cups of water.

  • Carefully wash the comb in the mixture. Don’t soak it or use a toothbrush to remove the dirt.

  • Dry the toothbrush well after cleaning.

Way № 2:

  • You’ll need cotton pads and an alcohol-containing product (like lotion or something like that).

  • Put the alcohol on a cotton pad and clean every bristle.

  • When the pads become dirty, replace them with new ones.

How to clean a metal hairbrush or a massage hairbrush with metal bristles

Metal hairbrushes, like wooden ones, shouldn’t be soaked in water. It’s better to clean them quickly without using any aggressive agents.

  • You’ll need water, shampoo, and a toothbrush.
  • Put 1-2 drops of shampoo on the hairbrush along with some water.

  • Using an old toothbrush, clean the bristles and the spaces between them.

  • Wash the brush with water, wipe it with a towel, and let it dry.
