How to Find the Proper Desk Size

Before you commit to buying a desk, it’s important to know what sizes can fit your needs. This might impact your day-to-day comfort, especially if you spend a lot of time working at it. We at 5-Minute Crafts will tell you what you should keep in mind before you decide to purchase a desk.

1. Find the right height.

You’ll need to consider how tall you are before you buy a desk. If you’re around 5 to 6.5 feet tall, your desk needs to fit those needs and be around 28 to 30 inches in height. Today, most office desks measure 28 inches, so they will do the job just fine.

However, if you don’t fit this height description, you can look for adjustable desks instead. These will not only be as tall as you want them to, but chances are they can also be used while standing. It’s important to make sure that the desk’s height is comfortable, no matter its settings, so that you don’t need to hunch over it while using it.

Tip: Use this formula.

  • First, choose your height on the website.
  • Then all you need to do is look closely at either the standing or sitting options, and buy a desk according to the values shown there.

Note: It’s important that when you put together your desk, you also adjust it within an inch of the measurements you’ve been given.

2. Check if your hands rest properly on it.

It’s important to make sure the desk’s height is comfortable. For this, rest your arms at your side with your elbows at a 90-degree angle. Make sure to keep your upper arms in line with your torso. If you feel uncomfortable, you might have to make up for it with an adjustable chair instead.

Note: You can try this trick whether you’re sitting down on a chair (regular desk) or standing (standing desk).

3. Take a look at your available space.

The more space you have, the bigger the desk you can get. If, however, you don’t have that much space, go for one that fits it. You might want to maintain at least 33 to 36 inches (84 to 91 cm) of room behind your desk if you want to place your chair there. Otherwise, keep around 48 inches free from the front so that other furniture or even accent chairs might fit.

4. Consider its width and depth.

It’s better to have more room than not enough. With that in mind, you’ll need to make sure the desk is big enough for your needs. It’s recommended to choose one that has at least 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) of depth for office work.

Don’t buy any desks that aren’t at least 24 inches (61 cm) wide. Otherwise, it might make it hard for you to use it. Choose one of that width or, if needed, wider.

Bonus tip: Choose the right chair.

Your chair should ensure that your knees sit comfortably at a 90º angle and that your feet are flat on the ground. In this position, you’ll be sitting comfortably, and the amount of stress on your joints might reduce.
