Every Harry Potter Spell There Is

Every Harry Potter Spell There Is

Spells and curses are usually words that are necessary for magic to be performed. They can be said out loud or thought in your head. The second option is for wizards that have already achieved certain results in magic.

5-Minute Crafts has collected all the Harry Potter universe spells in one place. Aside from these, there are some other spells that are not on this list because the actual words needed for them are unknown.

The markers to the left of the spells mean: 🔶 — you need to make a special wand movement to perform the spell. Or, 🔷 — you just need to aim the wand at your target, unless the instructions say otherwise.

❗️All the spells below are from the imaginary magic world created by J.K. Rowling.

Unforgivable curses

They are the most powerful curses in dark magic. If you perform them, you will be locked in Azkaban for the rest of your life. The only way to avoid the punishment is to prove that you were acting under the Imperius spell. Many dark wizards avoided jail by using this argument. And some of them managed to trick the Ministry.

🔶 Avada Kedavra — when successfully performed, it kills any living creature. This happens pain-free and all the internal organs remain intact. You can recognize this spell thanks to a flash of green light. When doing it, the hand should be drawing a bolt of lightning. Not every magician can perform this spell because you need to have magic power and you really need to want to kill the enemy. There is no counter-curse and the only thing that can save you is Sacrificial protection — when someone is ready to die for someone else. This is exactly what Lily Potter used to save Harry in Godric’s Hollow.

🔷 Imperius — complete control over the thoughts and actions of someone else. You just need to point the wand at the target. Only people with immense willpower can resist it. The fact that you can defend yourself from this curse makes it unique among other Unforgivable curses. If this spell is performed in the wrong way, the victim might be damaged for the rest of their lives.

🔷 Cruciatus — inflicting terrible pain. You just need to point the wand at the target. But it’s not enough: you need to really want to perform the curse. To hit a specific spot on the body, you need to point the wand at it. This is exactly what Dolores Umbridge wanted to do when she pointed her wand at Harry Potter’s scar, trying to get information from him.

Fighting spells

🔶 Waddiwasi — a jinx that can be used to propel a small wad of material at high velocity. For example, you can throw bubble gum at an opponent.

🔶 Colloshoo — sticks shoes to the ground making your opponent stumble.

🔶 Confringo — makes objects explode. If it hits a person, it can cause serious damage, even death.

🔶 Levicorpus — lifts a person by the ankle with their head down. The counter-jinx is Liberacorpus.

🔶 Locomotor Wibbly — stops the legs from moving. They feel jelly-like.

🔶 Locomotor Mortis — binds legs together. It feels like they are glued to each other.

🔶 Melofors — turns the enemy’s head into a pumpkin.

🔶 Morsmordrе — calls the Dark Mark. It’s used by Death Eaters.

🔶 Mucus ad Nauseam — causes a cold, a runny nose, and sneezing. It can be stronger when used with modifiers.

🔶 Rictusempra — causes the target to buckle with laughter, weakening them.

🔶 Slugulus Eructo — forces the victim to burp up slugs.

🔶 Tarantallegra — makes a target’s legs spasm wildly out of control, making it appear as though they were dancing. Can be used on people and on furniture with legs.

🔶 Titillando — tickles and subsequently weakens the target.

🔶 Flipendo — knocks the target backward. While prominently used for dueling, it can also be used to push heavy objects. There are modifiers that make the spell a bit more powerful, it sends blue sparkles and makes small tornados.

🔶 Furnunculus — causes a person to break out in boils/pimples when it comes into contact with their skin. Its consequences are removed with a special potion. When used with Locomotor Wibbly, the effect is different: small tentacles appear.

🔶 Everte Statum — causes the opponent to fly back several feet, and causes a short sharp pain depending on the strength of the spell, but does not cause any lasting damage.

🔷 Baubillious — makes a jet of white sparks from the tip of the wand. It can be used as an offensive dueling spell.

🔷 Verdillious — makes the wand tip light up like a flare, exuding green light, sparks, and smoke to damage a foe.

🔷 Verdimillious — emits green sparks from the wand. These sparks can be used to reveal objects hidden by Dark Arts and can be used offensively in a duel. To make the effect more powerful, add Duo. If you need to increase the distance of the spell, use Tria.

🔷 Vomitare Viridis — makes foes vomit.

🔷 Inflatus — inflates the target, filling it up with air until it floats above the ground.

🔷 Calvorio — removes the victim’s hair or headdress.

🔷 Mutatio Skullus — a dark charm that mutates the victim’s head.

🔷 Oppugno — directs an object or individual to attack the victim. This spell causes conjured creatures or other movable objects under the control of the caster to attack the target.

🔷 Orbis — suck the target into the ground. It can only be used if an ally is levitating the target whilst the spell is being cast.

🔷 Oscausi — used to seal someone’s mouth shut. The victim’s mouth will appear as if it were never there, with skin covering the area.

🔷 Sectumsempra — lacerates the target and causes severe hemorrhaging.

🔷 Serpensortia — summons a snake.

🔷 Freeze — causes ice to spread over limbs touching a hard surface, affixing them to it.

🔷 Expulso — produces immense explosions, blasting the target apart with a burst of blue light. It has enough force to throw people into walls.

🔷 Ecto — makes blobs of ectoplasm, launching them in an arc to splash down on the ground. Conjured ectoplasm can be cleaned up by the Skurge Charm.

🔷 Engorgio Skullus — used to swell the head of the victim. It is a variation of the Engorgement Charm. The counter-curse is the Head Shrink Spell.

Protective spells

🔶 Anteoculatia — grows antlers on the head of the target.

🔶 Arania Exumai — blasts away Acromantulas or other large spiders. If the spell misses and strikes a stone, it will produce a large black scorch mark, and this is why it is not recommended for use on humans, although casting through or along a human produced no ill effect so long as a spider was struck.

🔶Arresto Momentum — slow the velocity of an object.

🔶Brachiabindo — binds an opponent with invisible cords.

🔶Glacius — freezes a target with icy-cold air created from the tip of the wand. This, in turn, can freeze water, extinguish fires, and cool off Fire Dwelling Salamanders.

🔶Duro — turns enemies into stone.

🔶Immobulus — immobilizes and stops the actions of the target. With the use of this spell, the movement of living or animated targets is stopped, and the functioning of objects like Muggle burglar alarms are halted.

🔶Impedimenta — hinders the movement of the target, slowing it down or stopping it in its tracks.

🔶Incarcerous — conjures thick ropes or thin cords from “thin air,” that bind whatever the caster is pointing their wand at.

🔶Mimblewimble — ties the target’s tongue in a knot, preventing them from speaking coherently. This feature also allows one to prevent the victim from speaking the incantations of spells correctly, and hence, like the Silencing Charm, it is useful in dueling.

🔶Langlock — causes one’s tongue to affix to the roof of their mouth. It is known to work on humans as well as on spirits.

🔶Obscuro — conjure a blindfold over the eyes of the victim, therefore obstructing their view of their surroundings.

🔶Stupefy — stuns the target, rendering them unconscious. This charm is exceptionally useful in dueling, as it can quickly end a duel without causing lasting damage.

🔶Petrificus Totalus — temporarily paralyzes the opponent. If you cast it on a person, they will instantly fall down as if they are frozen but they will still be able to see, hear, feel, and think.

🔶Protego — protects the caster with an invisible shield that reflects spells and blocks physical entities. However, this shield isn’t completely impenetrable, as it cannot block Unforgivable Curses.

🔶Revelio — reveals concealed objects, messages, invisible things, and passages. It may also be used to reveal the true appearance of someone who changed their appearance with a spell.

🔶Riddikulus — used to defeat a Boggart. It causes a creature to assume a form that is humorous to the caster, along with a whip-crack noise, thereby taking away the Boggart’s ability to terrorize.

🔶Silencio — renders the victim temporarily mute. It’s a really difficult spell. If performed incorrectly, the target will swell up to an immense size and begin making deafening sounds.

🔶Fumos — creates a defensive cloud of smoke from the wand that hinders visibility.

🔶Ebublio — entraps the targeted individual, or indeed any target, in a very large bubble that cannot be popped by physical force.

🔶Expecto Patronum — the primary protection against Dementors and Lethifolds, against which there is no other defense. It’s a really hard spell and not many wizards can perform it. There are 2 types of Patronuses: corporeal which means a Patronus with a particular shape and form and incorporeal Patronus. To make a Patronus, you need to think about a happy memory.

🔶Expelliarmus — forces whatever an opponent is holding to fly out of their hand.

🔷Appare Vestigium — reveals and illuminates traces of recent magical activity and shows magical footprints and track marks in an area.

🔷 Homenum Revelio — reveals the presence of other humans in the surrounding environment.

🔷 Depulso — sends the target away from the caster. It’s the opposite of Accio.

🔷 Impervius — makes an object repel water and mist. This can be used to allow someone better sight in bad weather conditions by preventing the rain from hitting their face.

🔷 Incarcifors — transfigures an object into a suitable prison for a nearby creature, allowing it to capture or imprison the victim.

🔷 Cave inimicum — produces a boundary that keeps the caster hidden from view. Those who are on the other side of the shield are not able to see, hear, or, if the spell is well cast, smell them.

🔷 Lumos duo — creates a focused beam of light from the end of the wand. The spell’s light forces ghouls to retreat and hinkypunks to solidify, and therefore can be used as a defensive measure. The light can also be used to attract Chizpurfles, which are attracted to magic.

🔷 Lumos Solem — produces a blinding flash of sunlight. As Devil’s Snare hates sunlight and heat, this particular Light-creation spell is quite effective toward subduing it.

🔷 Muffliato — fills the ears of any person in the vicinity of the caster with an unidentifiable buzzing sound so as to allow for conversation without being overheard.

🔷 Partis Temporus — temporarily parts the target, creating a gap wherever the caster pointed their wand. Good for firestorms.

🔷 Peskipiksi Pesternomi — supposedly the incantation of a charm meant to capture (or possibly repel) pixies. It’s not entirely known if this spell really works because Professor Lockhart wasn’t able to perform it during the lesson. We don’t know if it’s because he was a poor magician or if it’s because the spell doesn’t exist.

🔷 Piertotum Locomotor — brings life to those artifacts that had, previously, been inanimate and unmoving. The target’s movements can be controlled by the caster of the charm. This spell was used by Minerva McGonagall to enchant the Chessboard Chamber.

🔷 Protego Diabolica — allows the user to create a protective ring of black fire around them that completely incinerates the enemies of the caster who came into contact with it while leaving their allies unharmed.

🔷 Relashio — forces the target to release its grip on whatever it is holding. It works on both living and inanimate targets, so long as it is holding something.

🔷 Repello Inimicum — when cast in combination with Protego Maxima and Fianto Duri, conjurs up a barrier of magical protection around the place the caster is trying to protect.

🔷 Repello Muggletum — prevents Muggles from seeing or entering an area. Any non-magic person that gets close to the vicinity of the enchantment will remember something urgent they have to do and leave.

🔷 Salvio hexia — deflects hexes from the area.

🔷 Flagrante — causes objects to emit searing heat when touched.

🔷 Fulgari — conjures vicious, luminous cords that bind an opponent’s arms.

Healing spells

🔶 Ferula — conjures bandages and wraps them around a wound, splinting any broken bones. The bandaging also appeared to ease the pain.

🔶 Episkey — heals relatively minor injuries like broken noses, toes, and split lips. Can also ease a headache.

🔷 Anapneo — clears the target’s airway by vanishing whatever the target is choking on.

🔷 Brackium Emendo — Professor Lockhart tried to heal Harry’s broken bones after the Quidditch match but it didn’t work. We don’t know if the spell was performed poorly or if it simply removes bones.

🔷 Vulnera Sanentur — a song-like incantation of a healing spell that is used to heal deep wounds, which can also be used as the counter-curse for the curse Sectumsempra.

🔷 Densaugeo — causes the teeth to elongate at an alarming rate.

🔷 Ossio Dispersimus — the incantation of a healing spell used to remove the bones from the targeted body part. Bones will vanish, making the affected body part (i.e. an arm) feel like rubber.

🔷 Rennervate — awakens whomever the caster’s wand is pointed at. Consequently, it serves as the counter-charm to the Stunning Spell.

🔷 Reparifors — reverts minor magically-induced ailments, like paralysis and poisoning.

Mental spells

🔶 Confundus — confuses and misdirects the target. It works on living and inanimate things, as long as the target has a mind and can be confused. For example, Barty Crouch junior tricked the Goblet of Fire with this charm.

🔶 Legilimens — allows the caster to perform Legilimency. In other words, to delve into the mind of the victim, permitting the caster to see memories, emotions, and thoughts. Skilled Legilimens, like Tom Riddle, are able to perform Legilimency without using the incantation or a wand. Highly skilled Legilimens are able to control their victims and create realistic visions. To redirect the spell, you can use Protego, which Harry did to Snape. Occlumency helps to resist the spell. A wizard or witch who practices this art was known as an Occlumens.

🔶 Obliviate — erases specific memories from an individual’s mind.

Opening and locking spells

Locking:

🔶 Colloportus — locks doors, making it so that they cannot be opened manually.

Unlocking:

🔷 Aberto — opens doors. It might not work if a more complicated charm is used before it.

🔶 Alohomora — unlocks objects like doors or windows. It is also able to open doors locked by the Locking Spell (Colloportus), and as such, acts as its counter-charm. The Anti-Alohomora Charm can be used to prevent this charm from working on a locked target.

🔷 Dissendium — opens secret passageways in general and the One-Eyed Witch passageway in particular.

🔷 Portaberto — splinters a lock from a door, allowing the caster to bypass a locked door. It is the most popular unlocking spell prior to the discovery of the Unlocking Charm.

🔷 Open Sesame — rips doors from their hinges and makes them into firewood. Before Portaberto and Alohomora, this was the most popular unlocking spell.

🔶 Cistem Aperio — blasts open trunks, chests, boxes, or other containers.

Destroying spells

🔶 Bombarda — detonates the target in a small explosion. One use for this explosion is to blast open sealed doors or to blow bars off of windows. The incantation Bombarda Maxima is a stronger, more powerful variation of this spell.

🔶 Deprimo — blasts holes in the ground. It is strong enough to shatter the floor of an entire room in a matter of seconds.

🔶 Defodio — gouges out specific areas of material, like earth or stone. Careful use of this spell can dig out the required object and leave the environment relatively untouched.

🔶 Reducto — blasts solid objects to pieces. It is rather easy to reduce a target to a fine mist or a pile of ashes.

Levitation spells

🔷 Ascendio— flings the caster high into the air. The charm also works underwater, propelling the caster above the surface.

🔶 Wingardium Leviosa — make objects fly, or levitate.

🔷 Carpe Retractum — produces a magical, retractable cord of light, that can be used to pull objects toward the caster, or, if the target is fixed in place, to pull the caster toward the target.

🔷 Levioso — a charm that levitates objects. However, it does not also allow one to move said objects and requires contact with the target (unlike a similar spell).

🔷 Locomotor — enables a witch or wizard to levitate a target a few inches off of the ground and then move said object in any given direction. This spell is described as basic.

🔷 Mobiliarbus — enables a witch or wizard to levitate a wooden target a few inches off of the ground and then move the said object in any given direction. It works on trees and wands.

🔷 Mobilicorpus — move bodies by suspending them a few inches in the air. This spell is able to move people who find themselves unable to walk, regardless of whether or not they are conscious.

Weather and elemental spells

🔶 Aguamenti — conjures a jet of clean, drinkable water from the tip of the caster’s wand.

🔷 Aqua Eructo — creates a spout of water from the tip of the wand. The intensity of the water flow can be anything from a thin fountain to an immense, powerful, and destructive jet.

🔶 Ventus — shoots a jet of strong, spiraling wind from the tip of the wand.

🔶 Incendio — conjures a jet of flames that can be used to set things alight. It’s good for setting wood in a fireplace on fire.

🔶 Inflamare — lights a target via a small fireball.

🔷 Lacarnum Inflamari — ignites cloaks or other items of clothing worn by individuals.

🔶 Metelojinx — creates a small, localized thunderstorm. Might make a snowstorm.

🔷 Stella Cascadia — creates a shower of stars. It can also be used during portraits.

🔷 Pullus — used to transfigure the target into a chicken. In particular, Erklings are rather vulnerable to this spell.

🔷 Scribblifors — a spell that transfigures the target into a quill — it is effective on forks.

🔶 Felifors — turns cats into cauldrons. If performed improperly, the cauldron can still have a tail.

🔶 Hystrifors — transformed a porcupine into a pincushion.

🔷 Entomorphis — a dark charm that can be used to induce insect-like qualities upon a victim for a short period of time. It deprived them of their ability to speak, forcing them to crawl about and endowing them with feelers.

Everyday spells

🔶 Avis — conjures a flock of birds. Out of all of the spells used to conjure living things, The Bird-Conjuring Charm is among the easiest, alongside the Snake Summons Spell.

🔶 Accio — summons an object toward the caster. It is able to summon objects in direct line of sight of the caster, as well as things out of view, by calling the object aloud after the incantation (unless the spell is cast nonverbally). This spell needs thought behind it, and the object must be clear in the caster’s mind before trying to summon it.

🔶 Aparecium — reveals secret messages written in invisible ink, or any other hidden markings written using other means.

🔶 Vermillious — precipitates a jet of red sparks from the tip of the wand, something that might be useful to signal an emergency and call for help.

🔶 Herbivicus — rapidly increases the growth rate of plants and causes flowers to bloom.

🔶 Diffindo — used to precisely and accurately cut something.

🔶 Cantis — makes the target sing. It doesn’t have to be a person, it can also be a knight’s armor.

🔶 Colovaria — changes the color of the target. It can change hair or fur color.

🔶 Orchideous — creates a bouquet of flowers.

🔶 Pack — helps to pack clothes quickly.

🔶 Reducio — causes an object to shrink. It is the counter-charm to the Engorgement Charm, causing enlarged objects to return to their original size.

🔶 Evanesco — used to vanish both animate and inanimate objects “into non-being, which is to say, everything.”

🔶 Scourgify — makes an object clean. Many wizarding families used this spell, both for cleaning and punishing people who swore, as the spell caused human mouths to be filled with soap.

🔶 Engorgio — causes the target to swell immensely. It is the counter-charm for the Shrinking Charm, causing shrunken objects to return to their original size.

🔷Alarte Ascendare — launches an object up into the air.

🔷Harmonia Nectere Passus — repairs a broken Vanishing Cabinet and perfects its performance. It requires more than simply speaking the incantation in front of the damaged device.

🔷 Glisseo — transforms a staircase into a smooth slide.

🔷 Descendo — makes objects fall or move downward.

🔷 Geminio — creates an exact replica of an object. It can also be used to curse an object into multiplying repeatedly when touched. Only the caster can stop the spell. The replica doesn’t have the value of the original. It’s not known if the spell works on live creatures.

🔷 Diminuendo — causes an object to shrink.

🔷 Capacious extremis — expands the internal dimensions of an object without affecting the external dimensions, enhancing its capacity and rendering its contents lighter. This charm is advanced magic and heavily controlled by the Ministry.

🔷 Periculum — allows the caster to send out bursting red sparks from their wand.

🔷 Point me — causes the caster’s wand to behave as if it were a compass and point north. The wand is put on the palm parallel to the ground.

🔷 Portus — turns an ordinary object into a Portkey. Since creating Portkeys is restricted by the Ministry of Magic, the usage of this spell is, by extension, restricted as well.

🔷 Prior Incantato — forces a wand to show an “echo” of the last spell it had performed. Its counter-charm is the Eradication Spell, which removes these images.

🔷 Sonorus — can be used to amplify the targeted sound, be it a person’s voice or a piece of equipment. The counter-charm to this spell is the Quietening Charm.

🔷 Specialis Revelio — reveals any spells performed on objects or potions.

🔷 Tergeo — siphons liquids like blood, dust, or grease, and to clean objects.

🔷 Finestra — shatters glass. This spell is useful in that it makes very little sound, allowing for discreet entry through a window.

🔷 Epoximise — binds 2 objects together, possibly by transforming an object into an adhesive or by conjuring a sticky substance.

🔷 Erecto — straightens out the target object and sets it up.

Counter spells

🔶 Meteolojinx Recanto — causes weather effects caused by Weather-Modifying Charms such as the Atmospheric Charm to cease.

🔶 Nox — causes the light at the end of the caster’s wand to be extinguished, thus acting as the counter-charm to the Wand-Lighting Charm (Lumos).

🔶 Reparifarge — a general spell used to counter the effects of a Transformation spell that is poorly performed and only partially transfigured the object in question.

🔶 Finite Incantatem — might have been used in duels to counter or reverse minor damage, such as the effects of minor jinxes, hexes, and curses. It can also be used on an entire home to (temporarily) stop the effects of protective enchantments, as a precaution, before a muggle answers the door.

🔷 Vipera Evanesca — vanishes snakes created by magic.

🔷 Deletrius — disintegrates certain objects and serves as the counter-charm to the Reverse Spell, vanishing the shadow emitted from the wand.

🔷 Quietus — used to quieten sounds.

🔷 Liberacorpus — counter-jinx to the Dangling Jinx (Levicorpus).

🔷 Offero — returns the target to its previous state.

🔷 Reverte — returns or reverts objects to their original positions or states, which might cause the targeted objects to move in reverse.

🔷 Surgito — can be used to remove an enchantment. Newt Scamander used this spell to lift a powerful love enchantment that was placed on Jacob Kowalski by his fiancée Queenie Goldstein.

🔷 Emancipare — releases bindings. Consequently, it acts as the counter-charm to Fulgari and Brachiabindo, as well as probably to the Incarcerous Spell.
