What sulfates are
Sulfates are chemicals that are employed as cleaning and foaming agents. You can find them in laundry detergents, home cleaners, and, of course, shampoo, which typically contains 2 types: sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These agents are supposed to make a lather and rid dirt and oil from the hair. That’s why you don’t necessarily get a foaming texture when you use sulfate-free shampoo.
Experts say that sulfates clean on the deepest level compared to other shampoo components. Moreover, they are the common ingredients in shampoo.
If they’re bad for us
There is a myth that these chemicals are harmful and can even cause cancer. However, scientific research has never confirmed that. In fact, sulfates shouldn’t cause any problems if you use shampoo properly. For example, you shouldn’t drink shampoo, as it can cause general toxicity.
It’s also good to understand that our scalp requires some natural oil to be left behind to support a healthy balance. So, for example, if your skin is sensitive, sulfates can, indeed, cause skin irritation.
Who should avoid sulfate shampoos
It’s recommended to use sulfate-free versions of shampoo if you have dry or fine hair. Those types are considered fragile for such components. You also shouldn’t choose a shampoo with sulfates if you are suffering from rosacea, eczema, contact dermatitis, or sensitive skin. In those cases, they can lead to irritation.
Check your body after taking a shower. You might be allergic to sulfates if after using such shampoo you experience the following symptoms:
- Redness
- Skin rash
- Swelling (inflammation)
- Itchiness
- Hives
If you suffer from any of these, opt for sulfate-free options as well.
