How to Choose Good Strawberries
Buying good strawberries is not such an easy task as it might seem at first sight. It’s a very tender and juicy berry that might go bad even when it’s slightly damaged.
5-Minute Crafts is going to tell you what things to consider when buying strawberries.
Color
Color plays an important role when buying strawberries because they don’t continue to ripen after they are picked like many other fruits and vegetables. So the color and sweetness will directly correspond to the taste: if a berry is white-green, don’t expect it to become sweeter in several days. Choose deep red berries.
Don’t forget to pay attention to the color of the leaves: they should be clearly green. After the berries are picked, the leaves start to dry and wilt. So, the fresher the leaves, the less time it’s been since the picking.
Size and texture
Small berries are often sweeter but it’s not a strict rule. There are different types of strawberries, weather and other conditions also matter. Don’t worry about the shape: there’s nothing perfect in nature, so an imperfect shape doesn’t meat the quality is bad.
What you should pay attention to is the texture: berries shouldn’t be dry and wrinkly because this means they are old.
Other things to consider
Strawberries might contain a lot of pesticides even after they are washed. To be safe, buy organic strawberries. They might not be tastier but they definitely don’t contain too many pesticides.
Look at the pack and make sure the berries don’t have any signs of mold on them. Even if just one of them has mold on it, there’s a chance many others also do, so the berries started to decay. Be especially careful with the bottom of the box because this is where the worst berries might be.
